Looking for a Masterpiece
20/04 - 10/06/2011
On April 20 the Open Gallery unveils a new project called "Looking for a Masterpiece". What makes a work stand out? What makes it the artist's calling card and wins it a cult following? What undeniable or, conversely, arguable esthetic qualities must it have to command our attention if we are generally overwhelmed by the ever-changing stream of information?
What makes a masterpiece in the present day and age is the question that has been discussed not only by artists and critics, but also by visitors. Alexander Brodsky, Andrei Monastyrsky, Valentin Dyakonov, Elena Elagina and Igor Makarevich, Andrey Kuzkin, Yuri Albert, Vladimir Smolyar, Avdey Ter-Oganian, MishMash team, and curator Natasha Tamruchi displayed art objects and texts, whereas the viewers got an opportunity to participate in an anonymous vote aimed to define the essential characteristics of a masterpiece. As a result of it: MishMash’s “Durability Test” was chosen.
